Wheatgrass ! Say what?

December 15, 2010                                       Weight: 177.5 lbs

Well,  Sari Dennis suggested a couple of weeks ago that I try Wheatgrass on a daily basis. She explained the wonderful properties of this food and I said I would give it a try.  So, off to a health food store for a 2 oz "shot."  The liquid is so rich that it took a couple of days for my body to properly ingest and digest.  I am a believer in this "food" and I actually purchased a juice machine to extract my own wheatgrass at home.  To be perfectly honest, I do not know exactly what to attribute my increased energy. I have lost 27 lbs.  I am eating well, exercising daily,  taking healthy vitamin supplements, consuming more water, no junk food, no caffeine, very little alcohol, no red meat, and taking wheatgrass.  It is probably a combination of all of these things.

Below is an excerpt on the advantages of wheatgrass.  Happy reading !!!

The Benefits of Wheatgrass
Excerpts from The Wheatgrass Book by Ann Wigmore

WHEATGRASS JUICE...

Increases red blood-cell count and lowers blood pressure. It cleanses the blood, organs and gastrointestinal tract of debris. Wheatgrass also stimulates metabolism and the body’s enzyme systems by enriching the blood. It also aids in reducing blood pressure by dilating the blood pathways throughout the body.
Stimulates the thyroid gland, correcting obesity, indigestion, and a host of other complaints.
Restores alkalinity to the blood. The juice's abundance of alkaline minerals helps reduce over-acidity in the blood. It can be used to relieve many internal pains, and has been used successfully to treat peptic ulcers, ulcerative colitis, constipation, diarrhea, and other complaints of the gastrointestinal tract.
Is a powerful detoxifier, and liver and blood protector. The enzymes and amino acids found in wheatgrass can protect us from carcinogens like no other food or medicine. It strengthens our cells, detoxifies the liver and bloodstream, and chemically neutralizes environmental pollutants.
Fights tumors and neutralizes toxins. Recent studies show that wheatgrass juice has a powerful ability to fight tumors without the usual toxicity of drugs that also inhibit cell-destroying agents. The many active compounds found in grass juice cleanse the blood and neutralize and digest toxins in our cells.
Contains beneficial enzymes. Whether you have a cut finger you want to heal or you desire to lose five pounds...enzymes must do the actual work. The life and abilities of the enzymes found naturally in our bodies can be extended if we help them from the outside by adding exogenous enzymes, like the ones found in wheatgrass juice. Has remarkable similarity to our own blood. The second important nutritional aspect of chlorophyll is its remarkable similarity to hemoglobin, the compound that carries oxygen in the blood. Dr. Yoshihide Hagiwara, president of the Hagiwara Institute of Health in Japan, is a leading advocate for the use of grass as food and medicine. He reasons that since chlorophyll is soluble in fat particles, and fat particles are absorbed directly into the blood via the lymphatic system, that chlorophyll can also be absorbed in this way. In other words, when the "blood" of plants is absorbed in humans it is transformed into human blood, which transports nutrients to every cell of the body.

Incredible Lab Results!

December 13, 2010                                         Weight: 178.5

Diet and Exercise
I wanted to share some from incredible results.....

Cholesterol went from 178 to 156 or a 14.1% reduction
Cholesterol/HDL ratio went from 4.2 to 2.2 or a 90.9% reduction
Triglycerides went from 112 to 53 or a 111.3% reduction

This clearly illustrates that healthy eating and daily exercise has a tremendous effect on one's body and health. Dropping 27 lbs and exercising daily generates these results.

I have increased my workout by 20 minutes daily as I was stuck at 180 lbs for some time.  Recently broke through this weight barrier.  It takes discipline but it is certainly worth it.

We are getting there......

A Three Month Recap!

December 1, 2010                                         Weight:  182 lbs

A Balanced Life
Through the Integrative Nutrition Program with Sari Dennis, I can truly share that adhering to this program has enabled me to achieve many of my personal goals.  I have lost 23.5 lbs in a healthy manner.  I have eliminated  red meat, coffee, most processed foods, junk food, pizza, artificial sweeteners, pasta, most dairy, milk, most alcohol, cheese and white bread from my diet.  I have been taking healthy vitamin supplements, drinking 2 oz of wheat grass daily and drinking lots of water.  I have been eating lots of fruit, vegetables, beans, fish and poultry.  In sum, I am cognizant of ingesting only healthy food into my body.

My bi-weekly sessions with Sari are enjoyable, educational and supportive. We have about an hour every two weeks to examine in detail the impact food has on one's physical and spiritual being.  Sari has a wealth of knowledge and if she does not know an answer to a specific question, she researches the topic and gets back to you with a response in a timely manner.

It's quite fortunate that I found out about this program as it will prolong my life and enable me to enjoy it in a healthy and complete manner.

The Exercise Component

In place of speed walking outside, I have been exercising a great deal in my home gym. My typical daily work out consists of 45 minutes on the elliptical machine, 5 minutes of stretching, 10 minutes of light weights and 20-25 minutes on a stationery bike. My body is absolutely changing in a healthy way.  My tummy is just about gone and my muscles are toned.  My new weight goal is 173-175.   Going to be visiting Brook's Brothers very shortly to purchase new suits and slacks. Just think...Lose weight and help the economy ! Wish me good luck in achieving this objective.

My First Experience at A Vegetarian Restaurant
I had the most incredible dinner with my family in celebration of my birthday.  Fifty two years young and feeling terrific.  Dinner consisted of: Vegetable Nori Rolls, Steamed Dumplings, Smoked Hummus, Wild Mushroom Trio to start, and Seitan Piccata to complete a divine dining experience! I have realized that my taste buds have changed and I can truly share that this healthy way of eating is extremely fulfilling and enjoyable.

Back on Track Again!

November 7, 2010                                             Weight: 186.25

Alternative "Medicine"

Need to focus on my goal, find relief for pain, get my body moving again and start the healing process. Introduced stationery bike riding 45 minutes a day at low to medium intensity. This exercise does not aggravate shin splints. Also, started to do upper body weights, stomach crunches and lots of stretching. Went to see chiropractor who used trigger points for pain relief and then went for a deep tissue massage for relaxation and health benefits.  I have 11.25 pounds to go and the firming up of muscles.  I am determined to obtain these objectives.  Wish me a speedy recovery and luck !

Not a Happy Camper !

November 1, 2010                                         Weight: 190 lbs

Anything in excess is not good !

Well, let me explain.... I thought I had a great workout idea.  Speed walking at high intensity up and down the steepest hills in my neighborhood.  Not the brightest of moves.  I ended up getting extremely painful and severe shin splints.  I actually never experienced this injury.  MD said it could take 4-8 weeks to heal.  Need to ice the area several times a day, wear an ace bandage and a removable soft cast at night and simply take it easy.  Not easy for me....Went home, had some chips and some wine for comfort food.  Another bad idea.  Weight started to creep up again.  To be continued.....

Move on up towards your destination....move on up !
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wWooVf17PBQ

In the beginning of the week, I was mentally in a rut !  I permitted negative energy of others to enter into my personal sphere siphoning off the positive  energy and outlook that I have had since embarking on this healthy program. No more !  I can't control the actions of others but I can control my mind and my body!  I feel much better now and I am back on track.

October 22, 2010                                            Weight  188 lbs

Can't Do Much Better Than This!
A home cooked, healthy dinner can be incredibly delicious and can rival any of the best restaurants in NYC.

And the menu is....
  • Dover Sole marinated in Mediterranean Herbs
  • Broccoli Rabe sauteed in Garlic
  • Bok Choy with Tamari Sauce
  • Portobello Steak Mushrooms
  • Water with a slice of lemon
  • Dessert - Pineapple with strawberries
Who is coming over for dinner?

PS:  I was so excited about working out this morning, I hit the roads at 3.45 am for a 3 1/2 mile speed walk listening to hip-hop on my I-Pod.  Very cool or rather, quite chilly!!

Breakthrough .....Yes !!!!

October 20, 2010                               Weight    189 lbs

Discipline and Focus!
I have started to incorporate the tightening of my abs as I engage in speed walking  without varying my pace.  Quite tricky to do but I am slowly started to see my mid section get a little toner. I have also started doing 50 crunches a day.

Frustration

October 13 to October 19, 2010                            Weight between 191 and 190

Patience is a Virtue!
Can't get the scale to move and it is really bothering me.  But, I reached the conclusion that my body simply needs to get "used to" this new weight for a period and then I will continue dropping weight but at a slower pace.

One Month Progress Report

October 12, 2010                                     Weight   191.75 lbs

The Secret to Good Health!
The secret is to try to only have healthy, natural things to eat, drinks lots of water and stay completely away from processed foods.

Very pleased with progress.  I have almost reached by midpoint goal losing about 14 lbs.  Overall  goal is to reach 175 lbs with a toned and healthy body.  Exercise is probably 15% of the success and diet 85%. However, exercise is critical to keep one's metabolism high.  I am committed to meeting my objective and then maintaining it.

Any cheating ?  Well, just a little.  Since I started this program, I had four glasses of wine and three alcoholic beverages and 2 cookies !!!!  BUT, no coffee, no red meat, no white bread, no pasta, no artificial sweeteners, no ice cream, very little cheese, no cake and no pizza ( at  tough one for me !)

Konsyl.....Say What Again!

Konsyl is a natural fiber supplement products that insures regularity.  You can purchase at CVS, Walgreens or most supermarkets.  Simply mix a small scoop of this product into a shaker filled with 2 oz of orange juice and 6 oz of water.  Shake and drink quickly.  I would not classify this drink as a "delicious" one but it is extremely effective.

Sari's Smoothie !

This is a delicious and healthy way to start your day.  This drink is fortified with vitamins and provides you with energy to last until you to lunchtime.  Try it ....you will be glad you did.

A Muscle Injury

October 1, 2010                                          Weight 196 lbs

OUCH!
I have no idea how I received a muscle related rib injury.  No fall at all. Hurts to breathe deep.  I guess its my body telling me to take a little break so that's exactly what I did.  Three days of no exercise and the fourth day was simply a nice and easy one mile walk.

Introduction of the Ellipitcal

September 28, 2010                                         Weight   198 lbs

I Like to Move It, Move It!
I am fortunate to have some exercise equipment in my basement but it has not been used in some time.  Started at 30 minutes, Level 12 and within a couple of days, I cranked out 45 minutes at level 14.  Had a few nice workouts and started to really stretch after exercising.  Stretching is a critical component to one's exercise regimen.

Detoxification

September 27, 2010                                                      Weight 198.00

Old Habits are Easy to Break!
My body has naturally detoxed itself from the cravings of sweets, alcohol and coffee.  I find this UNBELIEVABLE!  I have been drinking coffee daily since I was five years old. Yes, five years old. Until recently, I drank at least three cups of coffee a day and I now have NO craving for caffeine.  Same is true for the  most part with sweets.  After dinner, I would usually take a stroll to the "cookie cabinet" to get a desert fix.  No more urge to do so.  Lastly, it was a normal to have two glasses of wine with dinner or one glass of wine and an alcoholic beverage.  This habit has been broken completely!

Yes, it takes some discipline and focus, but it is indeed possible and absolutely worth it !

Bike from New York to Boston

September 19                                                  Weight 200 lbs

Well, Not Exactly. . .
Shipped my bike down to Florida and for seven days in a row, cycled along the Hollywood Boardwalk overlooking the Atlantic Ocean to a wonderful State Park where I did laps around absolutely beautiful vegetation.  Each day, the route was 31 miles.  Additionally, on two of the days, I speed walked 4 miles.  Upon returning to NY, I did one final ride of 24 miles on the gorgeous North County Trails in Westchester County.  All said, 210 miles.  Like I said, it's like riding from New York to Boston!

Body is starting to get toned !  Yeah !

Chard.....Say What?

September 15, 2010                                         Weight 202.75

The Delicious Tastes of Nature!
Well, I must share with you that until this week, I had no clue what chard was.  It's a wonderful dark, delicious green leaf which tastes very good with humus on it !  A wonderful lunch with a juicy nectarine.

Starting to wean myself off of sweets.  Not so easy !!!!

Started speed walking and stretching.  Felt good about this.

Personal Commitments

September 14, 2010                                        Weight 204.25

Healthy Choices for a Healthy Body!
In order to achieve my objective, I made the following commitments:  No red meat, no junk food, no alcohol, no pasta, no white bread, lots of vegetables, no pizza (very tough), very little cheese, lots of fruit, lots of water, no coffee, no artificial sweeteners and no processed foods.  Exercise daily for about one hour to keep metabolism moving.  And here we go...

Walked 2 1/2 miles today...nice and slow.

Let the process begin....
